Pezzolo Valle Uzzone
Pezzolo is a nice and quiet town in the Uzzone river valley. The most interesting historical traces are in the highest quartiers, on the hill that divides the valley from Liguria.
You cannot miss the little Gorrino village, gathered around its medieval castle. Famous is the village of Todocco, where is a famous sanctuary.
It is said to have been built in the place where the Virgin was seen by a child, and cured her.
Many pilgrims visit the sanctuary, because of the pleasant view and the walks.
The patronal fair, dedicated to the Virgin, is held in Todocco on the second Sunday in July; the town’s patronal fair is held on the second Sunday in August.
Pezzolo Valle Uzzone: museum of dry-wall building
On your way back to Cortemilia, you will drive through the last valley, the Uzzone Valley.
Here the villages are even smaller than tiny, and more ancient than traditional.
The villages here are considered more as open museums, showcasing the drywall building technique, which can be seen at its most traditional here.
The houses have been built with the typical local sandstone, and their walls have withstood the test of time, whilst being built without a trace of mortar or cement.
The roofs are made of slates and despite their weight and ancient construction, have surprisingly stayed in place, standing up to wind, rain, and heavy snowfall.
In Pezzolo itself, there are some small ‘palazzi’ (buildings) and a church.
Food & Drinks
As you might have learnt so far, in Langhe the best restaurants are often hidden in the most little towns and in the most hidden places, like treasures to be discovered.
The gem that you will find hidden in Pezzolo Valle Uzzone is “Osteria del Brutto Anatroccolo”.
Walking through a narrow vault with a little gate on the side of the main street of the town, you will enter an elegant restaurant with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The landlady and cook prepares high quality and well presented traditional dishes.
From starter to dessert, all courses are a feast for eyes and palate.
The wines are made by her husband Giovanni and served directly from their cellar.
