The Marriage, by Witold Gombrowicz

“The I is another,” writes Rimbaud; “the I is the mug that others have pinned on me,” thinks Witold Gombrowicz (1904-1969), according to the critical interpretation offered by Jan Kott (1971).

In the Polish author’s second theatrical work, the human ceremonial, and in particular the ritual of marriage, is at the center of attention.

Conceived as a tragic farce, the play interrogates the ways in which man’s impotence, to whom only the possibility of confrontation and symbolic, deforming gestures remains, assumes the most grotesque manifestations.

In a dimension suspended between dream and waking, the story, set by Gombrowicz in the dark night of the Second World War, is brought to our contemporary time, in which indifference, a sense of impotence, and vulgarity once again coexist in daily life.
